Rick Perry
Former Texas Governor and 2012 Presidential
Candidate, who has been chosen by US
President-elect Donald Trump as his nominee
for energy secretary.
"I will tell you, it is three agencies of government when I get there that
are gone: Commerce, Education, and — what's the third one there? Let's
see”, Perry stammered during a Republican presidential primary debate
in November 2011.
When pressed by the debate moderator to name the third agency, Perry
said, "The third one, I can't. Sorry. Oops".
Perry said later in the debate he meant to say Energy.
In his pre-2011 campaign book, 'Fed Up!', Perry referred to efforts to
tackle global warming as "hysteria" and described the science as a
"contrived phony mess". He even wrote that "we have been experiencing
a cooling trend".
Perry has said he would approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline
on “day one” if elected. He’s called the Environmental Protection Agency
a “cemetery for jobs”.
Perry’s nomination comes despite his ties to the Dakota Access pipeline
battle. He sits on the corporate board for Energy Transfer Partners, the
parent company of Dakota Access LLC, which is pushing to build the
pipeline. While the Obama administration blocked the Dakota Access
Pipeline easement through Lake Oahe, the Trump administration will
probably facilitate it.
The pipes are intended to continue facilitating the use of fossil fuels
and undermine imperatives to promote renewable energy.
When the Supreme Court found that the EPA had a duty to regulate
carbon pollution, Perry brought a lawsuit against the EPA as governor of
Texas to stop it - though the action failed.
In 2001, he vetoed a ban on the execution of mentally retarded inmates.
In 2002, he described the Texas same-sex anti-sodomy law as
"appropriate”.
Perry has called himself "a rm believer in intelligent design as a
matter of faith and intellect", and has expressed support for its teaching
alongside evolution in Texas schools.
